LAN Cable Distance Survey for Open RPG -- Dual RPGs

Purpose of Survey: The purpose of this survey is to determine cable distance between the WFO AWIPS Plaintree Local Area Network (LAN) switch and the I/O panel of the Open RPG. The Radar Operations Center (ROC) needs this information to order LAN cables for an AWIPS LAN to RPG LAN connection project.

Background: The proposed LAN interface between AWIPS and NWS radars will dramatically increase the bandwidth available for receiving weather products. The increase in bandwidth is required to support timely transmission of digital products, which will be included with the Open RPG. The LAN interface will further support central data collection of the expanded Archive III list and NIDS providers. Although the hardware will be deployed in conjunction with the Open RPG (ORPG) system, future target software releases are required for both AWIPS and RPG to make the interface functional. The LAN interface will eventually replace the 56Kbps X.25 serial interface between the co-located WFO AWIPS and RPG.

Effectivity:

This FAXBack survey only applies to the NWS WSR-88D RPG systems identified in Table 1 below. These sites have two co-located RPGs or will have following Open RPG deployment. If your WSR-88D system is NOT listed in Table 1, please disregard this survey.

Survey Instructions

At WFO Site:

  1. Locate the planned site of the Open RPG cabinet.

  2. Locate the Primary WFO AWIPS Plaintree LAN Switch.

  3. Measure the distance, in feet, including all turns, bends, drops, etc., necessary to install a cable from the site of the Open RPG cabinet to the Primary AWIPS Plaintree LAN switch.

  4. Repeat steps 1-3 for additional Open RPGs.

  5. Fax the completed Table 2 (last page of this survey) to the WSR-88D Hotline. Responses are needed by June 1, 2001.
