Important CDS Time Setting Instructions for WSR-88D Systems & Hotline Backup Voice Telecommunications

IMPORTANT CDS TIME SETTING INSTRUCTIONS FOR WSR-88D SYSTEMS

A procedural change is required for properly specifying the year when using the CDS command to set time (TIME or TI) at the PUP and RPG System Console. Starting on January 1, 2000, the year field should be entered using four digits rather than two (as was previously done and specified in the reference manuals). An example of the proper command line format would be:

CDS> TI U,THU,01/06/2000,12:15

After entering a time command under CDS, always verify that the time was set correctly by simply entering:

CDS> TI

The CDS time and date will be displayed in full. Please note that the operator should provide a four digit year field on each and every occasion that CDS time is set (beginning on 1/1/2000). As most of you know, setting the CDS clock is a part of the Set Time procedures for the PUP and RPG. Please reference the "WSR-88D Tales from the Hotline", Topic 5510, for guidance on the complete procedure for setting time at the RDA, RPG and PUP.

The above change is required because of a Y2K flaw or limitation in the CDS firmware that will precede a two digit year entry with "19" resulting in a year computation of 19YY (where YY is the operator entered value for the year). Please note that this guidance supercedes information provided in the operators manuals for setting the CDS time. Formal updates to technical/operator manuals are underway and will be provided at a future date.

Year 2000 Reboot Procedures for the RDA, RPG, and PUP

By now, all sites should have executed these procedures that were sent out to all field sites in July, 1999. If your site has not accomplished the reboot (one-time occurrence after 00:01 on 1/1/2000), please do so ASAP.

For clarification, we ask that you please make note of a typo on page C3 of the RDA procedures. Step 16 (for the RDA) should read:

"At the * prompt, enter" vice "At the CDS> prompt, enter"

In other words, cross out "CDS>" and replace with an "*" to avoid any confusion. Note that this change applies to all copies of the procedures -- those sent this summer to the field and also those downloaded or printed from the above-listed ROC website.

If you should require assistance with the Y2K reboot procedures, please contact the WSR-88D Hotline. Once the reboot procedures have been executed at your site, be sure to complete attachment 4 of the package containing the procedures and send it to the ROC. This Y2K compliance return form documents that your site has completed the procedures and is an asset for Y2K tracking and any future troubleshooting.

HOTLINE BACKUP VOICE TELECOMMUNICATIONS

The Hotline has cell phone service to back up voice telecommunications for field calls when the Hotline's normal voice lines are out. This number is monitored when we are aware of an outage in our normal voice line services. If you are unable to reach the Hotline via the normal voice lines, try the following steps (in order):

  1. Internet e-mail [monitored 24x7].
  2. Fax [monitored 24x7].
  3. Cellular voice communications [activated as soon as we are aware of an outage].

Please post this information prominently in your operations area and near your WSR-88D equipment. We will revise our Hotline stickers to reflect the cell phone number and distribute new stickers to all field sites in the near future. Contact Daryl Covey, ROC Field Support Section Chief, with any questions or comments. Thanks!

Note: The actual phone numbers have been removed from the WEB version of this document. Please see the copy that was FAXed to your site for more details. Or, contact the WSR-88D Hotline at our normal 1-800 number.
