Build 10 Helpful Loading Tidbits
Below are some helpful tidbits to be used while loading and supporting
Build 1Ø software.
All Systems:
- Follow the load instructions carefully. Many of the problems sites have
encountered are from not following the instructions explicitly.
- Make sure your tapes are all organized before starting the load. Remember,
some of the tapes you will use for loading Build 1Ø did not ship with
Build 1Ø . Instead, these tapes (e.g., Dead System) are from earlier
builds. On the tape matrix included in your kit, shaded boxes are for tapes
already on-site (i.e., from earlier builds).
- There is an ROC OTB web page containing frequently asked questions about
Build 1Ø.
- If you try to use an older style SCSI tape drive for your backups, you may
incur a high/low tape density incompatibility problem. Please call the
Hotline if this occurs.
- When loading the BACKUP utility, some sites are getting I/O, memory, and
alignment errors. This is usually caused by dirty tape drive heads, older
reused SCSI tapes, or faulty tape drives.
- During UNPACK, you may get errors such as segment load, memory, address,
etc. The workaround is to manually run the BACKUP utility.
At the * prompt, enter:
CA BACKUP <Return>
LO BACKUP <Return>
ST <Return>
At the BACKUP> prompt, enter:
IN=STØ :<Return>
OUT=DSCØ:<Return>
LIST=CON:<Return>
DEL/NOD <Return>
VER <Return>
END <Return>
- If any external dedicated line does not reconnect after loading Build 1Ø
(e.g., AWIPS, NIDS vendors, Marta WinPUP, etc.), contact their support center.
For example; the AWIPS NCF has instructions (System Admin Note #4) on the
changes needed on AWIPS to fully function with a Build 1Ø RPG.
- In Software Note 11, paragraph 8 states that an "Adaptation parameter
pamphlet" is included in the software kit. However, the "Operator Handbook
- Guidance on Adaptable Parameters" pamphlet(s) will be shipped with the
updates for the technical manuals.
PUP:
- Be careful when typing in the file name for restoring the auxiliary
background map files (Attachment 3, Step 47). Be sure to include the "-"
in the command: AUXMAP-.DAT. Otherwise, you will receive a message stating
"File Not Found".
- Remember, the TVS alerts on the PUP have changed. There are now two TVS
alert thresholds; 1 for ETVS and 2 for TVS. Please check your PUP alert
definitions (i.e., "AD,A,1" & "AD,A,2") to ensure any TVS alerts
(categories 1Ø & 27) are set appropriately.
RDA/RPG:
- All RPG dedicated modems, except the AFOS/PUES modem, need to be set to
14,4ØØ bps. Even the NIDS vendors (other user) modems have
to be set to 14,4ØØ bps. The AFOS/PUES modem should remain
at 96ØØ bps.
- Section 4 of the Procedures for Upgrading the Modem Baud Rate applies to
sites that have the UCP located remotely from the RPG. This means the UCP
modems for all of the military and FAA RPGs, plus the NWS's Key West system.
- Section 5 of the Procedures for Upgrading the Modem Baud Rate applies to
sites that have a remote MMI in the weather operations office. This refers
to NWS offices that have redundant RDAs.
- If you receive the following error at your RPG System Console, "LCRFLCT
Error 5Ø4; SQRT Negative Argument", then you will need to modify the
Layer Product parameter LØ at the following UCP screen:
"SE,[password1],L". This value needs to be set to the nearest
1ØØØ feet above your antenna height.
- For RRRAT (RDA/RPG Remote Access Terminal) sites, <Ctrl><Pause/Break>
must be used to break into the bootup process instead of
<Port/Break>. Also, <Alt><Tab> is used
instead of <Shift><Port/Break> to change from the
Applications Terminal to the System Console.
- The RDA now displays a tape count for Archive II. The tape number
displayed is initialized at Ø1 whenever an RDAUP is accomplished.
From there, it sequences by one every time a tape change occurs.
Unfortunately, the displayed tape number may not correlate to the actual
tape number in use by the Archive II device. The ROC is currently working
on and expects to deploy a tape counter utility program to all RPG/RDA sites
in the near future.
- The cover page (both front & back sides) for EHB 6-521-1, Change 2,
contains a few errors. The following should be used when posting the List
of Effective Pages sheet for Change 2 (back side) to the 6-521-1 manual.

- The List of Effective Pages sheet for EHB 6-56Ø, Change 1,
