NEXRAD NWS Frame-Relay Circuit Upgrades for FAA Alaska Radars to NWS WFOs

Schedule (PDF)                 Software Note 106 (PDF)

The NWS Weather Forecast Offices (WFOs) support Department of Transportation (DOT) WSR-88D radars for AWIPS product data ingest points (including Level III product sets), radar control (MSCF), and Level II distribution. The current 256 Kbps circuits are not adequate to accommodate future Dual Polarization and Level II upgrades. The upgrade of NEXRAD Frame Relay Circuits is required to support increased data from NWS Dual Polarization product sets. This modification also enables Level II data collection and dissemination from the seven FAA radars in Alaska that are currently not transmitting Level II data. The Frame-Relay bandwidth at the FAA radars will be increased to 512 Kbps, and the hosting NWS WFO frame-relay ports will be upgraded also. This document is issued under Radar Operations Center (ROC) ECP 438: COMMS UPGRADE FOR DUAL POLARIZATION, and ECP 0561: ENABLE LEVEL II RECOMBINED DATA FROM ALASKAN RADARS.
